Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders all carried the 30/40 Krag Carbine during the battle of San Juan Hill.  The rifle was manufactured by the Springfield Arsenal under license by the designer Krag. This was the first smokeless powder rifle purchased by the US Army.  The older civil war guns left smoke after they were shot, so the riflemen became easy targets for the enemy. The Krag could be used as both a single shot or a multi shot gun.  The US Army preferred soldiers to leave it in the single shot mode most of the time, so they wouldn’t use up too much ammunition.
